Design

With a size of just (L x W x H): 11.5 x 11.5 x 2.3 cm with an aluminum material-made case and a weight of 298gr, the Ugoos AM6 case delivers top-notch build quality. You can find the Ugoos brand name print on the upper cover of the issue. The LED operation indicator light is located inside one of the brand “O”  letters, giving it a nice design touch and changing colors according to different operating modes. For example, the blue color switches on sleep power-saving mode, the rose/pink for normal operation mode, and the purple color indicates the device is under a booting process.

As for cooling. The case shell, excluding the on/off button made from plastic, is entirely made from aluminum alloy material, most likely manufactured in the CNC machining process. Venting/cooling slots were also added at the bottom and the left side of the case. Overall, my impression of building quality was excellent.

First-time Operation

The operation of the Ugoos AM6 was straightforward. To turn the unit on, use the simple IR Remote control provided with the package or the power button next to the external Wi-Fi antennas. The remote control design was good and very young regarding color usage and button layout design.

As with most TV boxes, the default provided remote is essential and offers minimal functionality, especially in cursor navigation mode, where it’s prolonged and not very responsive. To use and operate this product effectively, you will need to buy a wireless keyboard, preferably with a Touchpad. You can check the excellent Rii i4 mini wireless keyboard with a good responsive small-size Touchpad that will not burn a hole in your pocket.

Hardware

The Ugoos AM6 comes in two main variations (editions). The standard edition is equipped with 2GB RAM, mainly designed for the end-user consumer, and a more high-level model with 4GB RAM (64-bit) for special OEM orders. Both editions are powered with the same snappy Amlogic S922X processor with six cores (Hexa).

The processor boasts the integration of two powerful CPU clusters. The first cluster houses a remarkable combination of quad-core (4) ARM Cortex-A73 cores, which can reach impressive operating frequencies of up to 1.7 GHz. Additionally, this cluster is accompanied by a secondary dual-core ARM Cortex-A53 cluster energetically capable of running at clock speeds of up to 1.8GHz. It is worth noting that, according to ADIA64 Hardware information, the quad-core clusters have been meticulously fine-tuned to operate at an even higher frequency of 2.2GHz, while the secondary cluster remains steadfast at 1.8GHz. These intricate settings have undeniably been masterfully adjusted to extract maximum performance from this remarkable processor.

System (Software)

The Ugoos AM6 is powered by the latest Android 9.0 operating system, providing a seamless and optimized user experience. With its app-free ROM and default Android UI, the device offers a clean and streamlined interface. It also comes with essential pre-installed apps like the Google Play Store service, ensuring you have access to countless applications and games.

Suppose you are a user seeking a more attractive interface with a better user experience. In that case, you can try an unofficial customized ROM based on Android 9.0 OS, developed by a software guy named sasvlad which offers an Android TV interface that can be downloaded through the freaktab.com forum.

According to Ugoos, a team of independent software developers is also working on making new OS images for Armbain, LibreElec, CoreElec, and perhaps more.

Unique Features List:

Additional unique features integrated inside the Ugoos AM6 firmware can be found under the ‘Ugoos settings’ option:

  1. ROOT – One-Click Installation for gaining instant root access.
  2. Automatic/manual frame rate adjustment.

Connectivity

In the video streaming arena, you are pretty much covered. The Ugoos AM6 package includes a pair of external Wi-Fi antennas. Capable of connecting to dual-band broadband routers that support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels. In my test, placing my Huawei P20 handset close to the box and testing connection speed, I received similar transfer speeds of 700 Mbps, indicating everything was working correctly.

Ethernet (LAN) connectivity was also performed with zero problems. With a standard 200Mbps connection, I could reach speeds of 130-150Mbps.

Netflix Support

The compatibility of Netflix is often overlooked in TV box reviews. However, rest assured that you can easily install and enjoy Netflix on this device without any complications. While it may not be officially certified as a Netflix device, it is unlikely to support UHD resolution for those on a premium plan. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the majority of content on Netflix is not in UHD. So, while this may not be a major concern, it is still worth mentioning its significance.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

  1. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

  2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
