Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Review

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Smart Bracelet is the latest wearable fitness tracker from Chinese hardware giant Xiaomi. It follows the previous Mi 2 Band with an improved design, featuring a low power 0.78-inch OLED Display the first time on the range, as well as improved pedometer tech, and long battery life capable of sustaining the device power up to 20 days of usage with a single charge.

Xiaomi’s Mi 3 smart Bracelet comes in two editions. The Chinese version, without any English support, sold for a retail price of ~ 22-23 USD, and the global international edition, which costs about ~26 USD that supports multiple languages such as English, Spanish, Russian, French and more that are expected to be updated in future firmware updates. Also important to mention that the Chinese edition can also support the English language if you update the device using a modified ‘Mi-Fit’ App that “forces” the installation of the English ROM.

Appearance & Design

The Xiaomi Mi band 3 incorporates a touch 0.78 inches OLED display screens with a resolution of 72 x 40 pixels. Looking at the appearance, it has curved edges that remind a pill-shaped design. Similar to the Huawei Honor, Mi Band 3 it’s not a multi-color display, but a single one which is enough for displaying text and power efficient.

The watch is composed of two separate parts, the fitness tracker unit which is the watch and the strap. Xiaomi designed a very stylish product that can easily carry in a pocket or a chain around the neck if you are not planning on using it with the strap. Another big advantage of buying this product is that you can buy online a wide selection of accessories such as extra straps in a variety of styles and colors, including screen protectors to protect the display from scratches.

Charger Design

Xiaomi’s charger design is completely different compared to those of the Huawei honor 3 Band. Xiaomi designed a short USB cable integrated with a charger housing unit for the tracker. Again, in comparison to the Huawei honor 3 Band,  the main unit in Huawei product is not removable. Huawei designed a special small charger unit that contacts directly to the watch by applying small pressure with a snap-type connection.

Charger Design | Pros & Cons

Some users might not feel comfortable with the fact that each time you will need to charge the fitness track you will need to remove the unit from the strap, but because this Smartband battery can operate between 14 – 20 days of none continuous usage, combined with standby mode to save battery power it’s a small price to pay. The cons of Xiaomi’s design are that you don’t need to carry a separate USB cable along with the charger unit. You have them all in one unit. In the worst-case scenario, if you have technical problems or lost it, you can always buy an extra unit online.

Ergonomic design

The Mi3 Band fitness tracker unit has a Capsule Design with flat surfaces. Users that tighten the strap might feel incompatible with wearing it. For comparison, Huawei honor 3 band tracker shape with the strap has a curved shape that fits better in the hand when worn.

Battery information

In the Honor Band 3, The battery indicator is displayed on the watch main screen, while in the mid3 you can’t see real-time info about battery power consumption during usage. Default Time information in the My Band 3 is displayed in the smaller text compared to those of the honor band 3 Smartband (As shown in the photo below).

Outdoors usage

Similar to many Smartbands sold on the market.

OLED display technology is cost-effective but it’s not an ideal pick for outdoor use. If you are planning on doing sports activities on a very sunny day the information displayed on the OLED display will not be visible. A simple solution to this problem is to view display in a shaded environment where there is less sunlight.

Connectivity

The Mi Band 3 can be used with a mobile phone linked wirelessly through a Bluetooth connection or used independently. When used independently, it will naturally consume less power and will not drain the phone battery.

Battery

The Mi Band 3 uses an identical 110 mAh Li-Ion battery as in the Honor Band 3. When the Smartband is not linked to a mobile phone and not used continuously is used, you can expect approximately ~14 – 20 days of usage with a single charge.

Software

Xiaomi’s strongest point is the ability to design products that can be customized by users and they did it successfully again with the Mi Band 3. In addition to the ‘Mi-Fit’ App, you will also be able to tweak and customize device settings such as notifications, displayed fonts, or selecting different vibration profiles by downloading 3rd party apps created by independent developers that can be downloaded for free from ‘Google Play’.

Huawei’s ‘Health’ vs. Xiaomi ‘Mi-Fit’ App

UI (User Interface)

Although Huawei’s ‘Health’ app is packed with more advanced features, that perhaps more aimed at advanced users, but it’s defiantly less user-friendly compared to Xiaomi’s ‘Mi-Fit’ App that offers a very simple user-friendly UI any user can manage to operate.

Other special functions:

  • Weather Information
  • Share data with friends
  • Behavior tagging
  • Wake up notifications
  • Activity alerts
  • Stopwatch
  • Linking to the following platforms: Sina Weibo, Wechat, QQ, Alipay

Displaying Weather Information

A feature that doesn’t exist in the Honor Band 3 and implemented well by Xiaomi allows the user to view weather information. Current day and the next day forecast with temperature directly from the watch.

Dynamic heart rate monitoring

Another nice feature that Xiaomi added to their Mi Band 3 is the ‘Automatic heart rate detection’ function. With it, you can measure heart rate almost in real-time and set interleaves between each measurement from 1 min up to 30 min. It’s a useful option if you want to monitor heart activity and view a detailed graphic report displaying the minimum and maximum heart rate peak values measured during the day.

Final Words

The Mi 3 is an excellent product for monitoring sports activities. In my opinion, it definitely belongs to the top companies in this product line next to Huawei. The extra software support also gives it more value and flexibility for users. It’s a must-have product to use and I highly recommend buying it.

Accessibility Statement

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

  1. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

  2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  1. Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  2. Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  3. Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  4. Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  5. Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  6. Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  7. Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
