Software: Powered by Google TV OS

One of the most compelling advantages for users of this device is its integration of the certified Google TV OS, rather than relying on the standard Android AOSP (Android Open Source Project) that is commonly seen in smartphones and tablets. In essence, Ugoos is opting not to utilize their unique root access and other useful customized features we have come to expect from previous models within this more restrictive operating system.

So, how does it perform?

To our surprise, everything functioned smoothly. The GUI was highly responsive, and the operating system demonstrated good responsiveness to user interactions.

Operating System

The device we utilized for our analysis operates on Android TV 12, powered by a kernel version 5.10.226. Unfortunately, the firmware is limited to compatibility with 32-bit applications (Apks) due to the operating system’s constraints, as defined by the SDK from the SoC manufacturer, Realtek.

Can I install external APKs?

Yes, the answer is affirmative. While Google TV may appear to have tighter security, but you still have the ability to install external apps. Just be sure that the APKs you plan to install are compatible with Google TV OS.

So, what’s new?

As previously mentioned, the SK2 comes with Google TV OS pre-installed. You may be curious about what’s new and included. Primarily, it features an updated, more visually appealing GUI with significantly enhanced customization options. Additionally, the apps are categorized into distinct sections, making it much more organized and user-friendly. Essentially, the apps featured on the tile-based interface are not installed locally unless you decide to install them yourself. It’s convenient, and you can also use the search option if you’re looking for something more specific.

At the beginning of the setup process, you will be asked to configure the remote control and choose your TV model from a list of known brands. This allows you to control not only the TV box operations but also essential TV functions like power and volume via the same remote control. After that, you simply enter your Google account information, select your user profile, and you’re all set to enjoy your experience!

Advanced Audio and Display Settings

The Ugoos SK2 provides a variety of audio features. Additionally, for surround sound enthusiasts, the box supports all major surround sound audio formats, including Dolby Atmos, Dolby AC4, and DTS HD. You can also enable audio over SPDIF, which is super useful for connecting the device with a home audio receiver.
